The recent passing of a 26-year-old EY employee in Pune is a heartbreaking reminder of the devastating impact that extreme work stress can have on mental and physical health. Just four months into her role, this young professional’s life was tragically cut short, allegedly due to the relentless pressures and demands of her job. Her mother’s emotional letter, which has been widely circulated, paints a disturbing picture of a work environment where sleepless nights, unmanageable workloads, and the denial of leave were the norm.

This incident is not just an isolated case but a reflection of a larger, systemic issue prevalent in many high-pressure industries today. The culture of overwork, often glorified as dedication or a strong work ethic, is taking a toll on the well-being of employees across the country. It’s a silent epidemic that needs to be addressed urgently.

At Talkitout, we believe that mental health should never be compromised for the sake of work. No job is worth sacrificing your well-being. Employers must take proactive steps to create healthier work environments—ones that prioritize mental health, encourage taking breaks, and offer support for those struggling with stress.

This tragedy should serve as a wake-up call for all of us. Let’s start conversations about mental health in the workplace, challenge toxic work cultures, and advocate for better policies that protect employees from burnout. By doing so, we can help prevent such heartbreaking losses in the future.

If you or someone you know is struggling with work-related stress, please reach out. Help is available, and it’s okay to ask for it. No one should have to face this battle alone.
